everettpotter.com | For a village that only exists a few months a year, this spot is bustling with activity. New residents unload their houses off trailers and look for the best spots to set up camp. Two tractors with specialized attachments clear swaths of snow, sending clouds of fluffy flakes swirling into the air. Several people with ice augers, which look like human-sized corkscrews, look to stake out a prime location. There are even a few dog walkers out to check out the action. This was the scene on a frigid January afternoon on a bay of frozen Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith, New Hampshire. It was particularly busy that time of year, with a large outdoor ice hockey tournament (the Pond Hockey Classic) and a popular ice fishing derby taking place in the coming weeks.

On a recent visit to Meredith, we got to check out the icy action while staying at the Mill Falls Resort Collection at the Lake, a group of four hotels located in downtown Meredith. Our home was the largest of the four properties, Church Landing, located right on the shores of Winnipesaukee’s Meredith Bay. Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s largest lake, boasts nearly 300 miles of shoreline and more than 250 islands, as well as various scenic lakeside towns, including Meredith. It’s known for being the fictional setting of the Bill Murry/Richard Dreyfuss comedy hit “What About Bob,” and is frequented by celebrities like Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore.
