More Winter Festival Fun!

A couple weeks ago we highlighted some Winter Festivals to Celebrate the Season (see post here). One of them will be taking place next weekend, and we are listing a couple more festival options below. There’s still time to make a trip to the Lakes Region and join in the winter fun!

Alton Bay Winter Carnival—February 19, 2017—Alton Bay. Weather conditions permitting. Located right on the frozen surface of Lake Winnipesaukee’s Alton Bay, this carnival is one of a kind! As this event takes place at the Alton Bay Seaplane Base and Ice Runway, it features a fly-in on the last FAA-certified ice runway in the continental United States. The 2,600-foot runway is open to single-engine aircraft and is operated by a faithful group of volunteers every winter when the ice is at least 12 inches thick. In addition to the colorful fly-in, the Carnival will feature a bed race, where teams of five—four to push and one to ride—make up their beds, put skis on the bottom and push the beds across the ice. Other activities include a bob-house decorating contest, children’s fishing derby, snowmobile demonstrations and parade, pond hockey, ice princess walk-around, crazy hat contest, and a scavenger hunt. Wolfeboro Winter Festival—Febrary 25 – March 4, 2017—Events will be held throughout Wolfeboro, at the Abenaki Ski Area, Pop Whalen Ice Arena, and other locations. This unique festival features a progressive cross-country ski dinner. This is a magical experience on a trail lighted with candles! Strap on your XC skis or snowshoes and travel around the moderate ski loop while stopping at stations with appetizers, main courses, desserts, and more! Some of the other festivities include a pancake breakfast, sleigh rides, a “Big Air” competition, ice skating, and ski and snowboard races. Abenaki Ski Area will also feature a bonfire and Snowsnake Torchlight Parade after dark, and will wrap up with a fireworks display. For updates and more info, check the event calendar at or call 603-569-5639.

What wonderful ways to enjoy winter!
