Don’t Flake on the Fun: 5 Can’t-Miss Winter Events Around Meredith, N.H.

There’s much to admire about warm weather on the waterfront, but swapping out the swimsuits for snowshoes is far from a sad occasion around here. Watching Meredith Bay begin to glaze over as Jack Frost nips at our noses is a small reminder that our favorite winter events are just around the corner.

5 Winter Events in the Meredith Area You Don’t Want to Miss

The Latchkey Cup Race (Moultonborough, N.H.)

Drivers, rev up your engines! This annual benefit race, held in nearby Moultonborough, swaps the tarmac for a racetrack on ice. The Lakes Region Ice Racing Club holds weekly races on Sundays as soon as the ice level allows — but the real winter draw comes in the form of the annual Latchkey Cup, typically scheduled for the last Saturday of January.

Tamworth Sled & Skijor Race (Tamworth, N.H.)

On the flip side of the dog days of summer, the oldest continual sled dog race in the Northeast flies by a frosty Lake Chocorua waterfront, just half an hour from Meredith. The Tamworth Sled & Skijor Race began in 1937 and continues to draw animal lovers and winter wanderers to Chocorua Lake year after year. Spectators are welcome to wander right onto the ice and usually have hot food and a bonfire to keep warm by.

New England Pond Hockey Classic (Meredith, N.H.)

Who needs an arena when you can take to the ice old-school style? At the start of February, Meredith Bay turns into a full-fledged ice hockey rink for the New England Pond Hockey Classic. The annual tournament entices teams from all across New England to stake their claim over the WinnipeHockey Cup. Exciting for spectators and sportsmen alike, this nostalgic skate scene has quickly become one of Merideth’s most anticipated winter events.

The Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby (Meredith, N.H.)

Break the ice with fellow fisherfolk during Meredith’s annual Ice Fishing Derby weekend. Following right on the heels of the big hockey weekend, Meredith Bay transforms yet again — this time, into a small village of colorful bob houses, as fishermen from all over the country vie for a chance to hang their catch on the wall of winners.

Kidworks Annual Comedy Night (Meredith, N.H.)

If you ask us, the best way to round out the tail-end of winter is with some good belly laughs. For nearly a decade, Comedy Night at Church Landing has brought top-rated comics and comedy fans together to raise money for Kidworks Learning Center.

These five winter events are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to frosty fun in the area. Between bundling up around Church Landing bonfires to hopping on horse-drawn wagon rides through the village, a stay at Mill Falls puts you smack-dab in the midst of our favorite snowy season traditions.
