17 Jul Professional Musicals are in Full Swing at Interlakes Summer Theatre!
Professional theater is a summer tradition throughout New England as actors and directors come to the area from the big cities for the changing seasons. Musicals are a big part of the summer theater lineup in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, and one local venue specializes in the genre. This summer, Interlakes Summer Theatre has a fabulous season underway, with rave reviews from locals and visitors alike!
Interlakes Summer Theatre is a recently renovated, beautiful 420-seat proscenium theatre located in Meredith on Lake Winnipesaukee. The Theatre’s mission is to provide quality entertainment for folks of all ages by offering a wide variety of professional theatre each summer. The artistic team consists of New York directors, musicians, choreographers, designers, and technicians. This summer, the lineup includes classic musicals, such as West Side Story, The Addams Family, Sister Act, and Not Fade Away.
Playing now, July 14th – July 26th is The Addams Family. This wonderful new musical comedy was created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice, and Drama Desk Award winner Andrew Lippa, inspired by the comic strip upon which the TV series was based. In this musical, the plot centers on teenage daughter Wednesday, the ultimate princess of darkness, who has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family, a man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before—keep a secret from his beloved wife Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents!
July 28th – August 9th is Sister Act, The Musical. This cheerful musical full of comedy, rousing choreography, and terrific songs tells the story of the determined, but not particularly successful, nightclub singer, Deloris van Cartier. When she witnesses a murder, the police take Deloris under protective custody and hide her in a convent. Dressed as a nun, she soon finds fans amongst her fellow nuns—but the Mother Superior is not at all impressed by the new convent pupil. While in hiding, Deloris helps the convent’s somewhat out of tune choir get into key, and the nuns’ voices begin to resound in a truly divine chorale. Along the way, Deloris helps return the run-down church to its former glory, and thereby risks blowing her cover. The gangsters take up the chase and are soon hot on her trail. Has Deloris run out of time? Or has the gang underestimated the divine strength of sisterhood?
August 11th – August 16th is Not Fade Away, The Ultimate Buddy Holly Tribute. Go back in time with Interlakes Summer Theatre to celebrate the music of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and more! This new, all-rockin’ show will have you dancing in the aisles to your favorite classic hit songs “Peggy Sue,” ”La Bamba,” “Shake, Rattle & Roll,” and many more!
