This is the pinnacle of the season—the sun is warm, the air is crisp, and the colors throughout the area are glorious—welcome to autumn in New England! For residents and visitors to New Hampshire, the high point of fall has long been Columbus Day Weekend, when peak colors often coincide with the three-day holiday. This year is no exception, with the foliage now popping vibrant reds and oranges in the Lakes Region. Here are some fun ways to enjoy the scenery this weekend:

Fall Foliage Special Trains and Cruises – The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad and the M/S Mount Washington are offering special excursions that highlight the beauty of the Lakes Region and allow guests to view the landscape from a different angle—away from roads and towns. Head through the woods to the other side of the hills on the Scenic Railroad or out onto the stunning Lake Winnipesaukee aboard the M/S Mount Washington. For more details, check out our recent blog post here.

Harvest Festival – Bring the whole family to Beans & Greens Farm in Gilford, NH for a weekend of fun fall activities. Little ones can visit and feed the barnyard animals and explore the indoor Haymaze. The farm is also offering free hayrides, as well as a chance to meet a live scarecrow on Saturday between 12 -3 pm. Guests of all ages can try to hit the Bull’s Eye with the Veggie Slingshot! The farm’s deli will be open all weekend serving hot cider, cider donuts, and hot soup in addition to many other tasty treats, and the popular Corn Maze will be open every day as well as Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from 8-10 pm. On Saturday night, the farm will host a bonfire with their delicious chili prior to the corn maze opening! The Sandwich Fair – Visitors to the Lakes Region can also enjoy the Sandwich Fair while on their foliage excursion. This annual tradition, always on Columbus Day Weekend, has taken place for over a century and is one of the biggest fairs in New England. With dozens of 4-H exhibits, food contests, tractor shows, and even a poetry reading, Sandwich Fair truly has something for everyone.  All the fun is listed on the fair’s website here.

Annalee’s 80th Anniversary Celebration – Celebrate 80 Years of Annalee Dolls at the Annalee Gift Shop in Meredith, NH. All weekend, visitors can enjoy in-store specials, door prizes, refreshments, and much more!
