Fishing Derby landscapeNext weekend, the frozen surface of Meredith Bay will be transformed from a pond hockey tournament site into a village of ice-fishing bob houses as folks gather from all over the country to participate in one of the Lakes Region’s biggest winter events: The Great Rotary Fishing Derby. The Derby has been drawing crowds to Lake Winnipesaukee for 36 years, with many hoping to snag the heaviest eligible fish for a chance to win the grand prize.

pond hockey landscapeIt’s been very cold this winter, and that’s good news for some folks, for low temperatures mean frozen lakes and ponds, and where there is ice, there will be hockey! Right now in Meredith, NH, crews from the New England Pond Hockey Classic are preparing rinks on the solid surface of Lake Winnipesaukee in anticipation of next weekend’s annual tournament!

In addition to skiing, skating, and snowmobiling, New Hampshire has wonderful opportunities for some quieter activities that don’t require much money or special equipment, but still get the heart pumping and the spirit soaring. king pine skiingWe have snow in New Hampshire! And along with snow comes classic winter activities, including skiing at some wonderful resorts in the Lakes Region. This weekend, King Pine Ski Area is taking it to the next level with a fundraising ski challenge for a great cause. Starting tonight, January 9th at 9pm and going through Saturday the 10th, King Pine Ski Area at Purity Spring Resort in East Madison is sponsoring the second Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon. The Ski-A-Thon will benefit one of King Pine's own, Sammy Gillard, a little girl with Rett Syndrome. The event’s goal is to raise $45,000 to fund a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for Sammy. With this vehicle, Sammy’s family will be able to continue to travel with her and provide a much happier and fuller life.

FOT 2014The Altrusa Club of Meredith will soon be hosting their 19th Annual Festival of Trees during the first full weekend of December. This much anticipated event will be held at the Waukewan Golf Club in Center Harbor, NH, and will highlight beautifully decorated Christmas trees, fine products made by local artisans, traditional cookies and cider, and a special children’s event, all while benefitting local charities and community projects.
