At the height of summer in New Hampshire, blueberries of all varieties come into season. The wild, low-bush berries can be found in the woods and along the water’s edge throughout the Lakes Region, and many folks enjoy kayaking for blueberries. In addition, several varieties of domestic high-bush blueberries are grown at local farms, where visitors can pick their own or buy them by the pint. Either way, these sweet berries are not to be missed!

There is nothing like the haunting call of a loon on a quiet night—it is an unmistakable and soothing sound of summer in the Lakes Region. Here in New Hampshire, loons are treasured as an integral part of lake life, and folks all around the state are working together to monitor, protect, and celebrate this beautiful and endangered animal. The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) was created in 1975 in response to concerns about a dramatically declining loon population and the effects of human activities on loons. Since then, the LPC staff and a large grassroots network of over 1,500 members and volunteers have undertaken state-wide monitoring, research, management, and outreach to preserve loons and their habitats. Their work of over 40 years has had a profound positive effect, not only for the loon population, but also for other species that depend on clean water, natural shorelines, and functioning ecosystems. In celebration of these efforts, the LPC has some great events this summer that the whole family will enjoy…

Lake Winnipesaukee is rich with history and tradition, especially when it comes to boats. As long as there have been people at the Lake, there have been canoes, sailboats, speedboats, ferries, and cruise ships! The annual Antique Boat Show that takes place in Alton Bay is one of the most well attended summertime events in the Lakes Region, demonstrating that folks really treasure the timeless adventures that boats can offer. In that spirit, EKAL Activity Center is now offering antique speedboat rides with the newest addition to their fleet, Miss Meredith.
